Why design?

I get to exercise so many ways of thinking. I can be both analytical and creative, work both collaboratively and independently, write, illustrate, organize, talk to people and learn how they think.

I love the novelty of the process and how each project is unique.

My journey

As long as I can remember I’ve been obsessed with both making things and understanding others’ behaviors and feelings. It was during college that I finally was introduced to design and found the perfect marriage of those two passions.

I’ve been hooked ever since.

Other things I do

I believe that the act of designing is an organic conversation. And as any good conversationalist knows, you need to pull from a wide variety of experiences and information to engage your audience.

Here are some of the experiences that feed my own design conversation.

Expand my comfort zone

In late 2010 I moved to Argentina to learn a second language..and stayed for 12 years.

Fully immersed in not only a second language but a second culture taught me far more than the Spanish fluency that was my original goal. It truly reconfigured my perspective on myself and the world. I learned so much about communication, sharing and fútbol.

Fuel my imagination

I'm always reading a book.

These days I go through them slower than my voracious, book-a-day childhood, but I've always got one waiting for me on the nightstand. Some absolute favorites include 100 Years of Solitude, Popisho, The Giver, The Essex Serpent. And I'm always open to suggestions.

I'm currently reading Midnight's Children, I admit because after Salman Rushdie's recent attack, I was curious to read the source of so much controversy. So far it's gorgeous and complex.

Practice empathy

Nothing has made me feel more human than becoming a mom.

I’ve found a whole new capacity and dimension of empathy. It’s highlighted for me the reality that everyone is constantly learning, struggling, exploring and just plain doing their best.

Find focus

Sounds cliché, but I do love my yoga practice.

I've been practicing since just after college and it's given me exactly whatever I needed at different stages in my life so far. Stress relief, a good workout, a humbling tumble, connection with others or myself. It's sort of magical really. These days I'm really into a heated flow class and my cork mat.
